Une application “portable” est un logiciel fonctionnant de manière autonome sur une clé USB, un cédérom ou un autre média amovible sans installation préalable sur le disque dur de l'ordinateur hôte. An application "portable" is a program operated independently on a USB stick, CD or other removable media without prior installation on the hard disk of the host computer. Vous pouvez ainsi utiliser librement un logiciel et vos données personnelles sans laisser de traces sur ce dernier. You can freely use your software and personal data without leaving a trace on it.

Attention cependant à ne pas confondre le concept d'application “portable” et de portabilité , qui signifie que l'application est exécutable sur différents systèmes d'exploitation, par exemple Linux et MacOS. Be careful though not to confuse the concept of application "portable" and portability, which means that the application is executable on different operating systems, eg Linux and MacOS.

A ce propos, je trouve qu'on devrait plutôt utiliser le terme application autonome ou transportable au lieu de s'inspirer du terme “portable application” anglophone, ce qui se rapprocherait plus d'un autre synonyme anglophone : “standalone application”. At this point, I think we should rather use the term portable or standalone application instead of inspiration of "mobile application" English, which is closer to another English synonym: "standalone application".

Les applications portables sont un phénomène très à la mode depuis que les médias amovibles sont suffisamment puissants pour offrir l'espace et le débit nécessaire à leur exécution. Portable applications are a phenomenon in fashion since the removable media are powerful enough to provide space and throughput necessary for their implementation.

Il ya toujours eu tout un tas d'applications exécutables sans installation. There was always a lot of applications that run without installation. Certaines applications non portables peuvent même être portabilisées . Some applications may not even be portable portabilisées. Le concept est simple : il suffit de décompresser l'installeur puis de lancer le fichier exécutable qui était contenu à l'intérieur. Il faut cependant parfois passer par une étape supplémentaire qui consiste à émuler les clés du registre utilisées par le logiciel.
